Corrosion Protection
ALTENE® System
ALTENE RP2 service
This is a two-ply tape system in which the corrosion protection tape has a very pliable laminated polyolefinic backing along with a high performance instant tacking adhesive mass.
This system is widely used in urban gas and water distribution networks and has been approved by italgas (Italian Gas Company)
The tape is generally applied manually to wrap weld joints of up to 24” diameter.
Maximum continuous operating temperature: +500C
Composition of the system : (Total thickness 2mm, with minimum overlap of 50%)
ALTENE RP2 service H.D
This system is similar to the previously described RP2 service but with the new outer wrap (ALTENE N 122.20) it meets the requirements of DIN 30672/I Specification, Class B, reaching higher mechanical resistance.
Composition of the system : (Total thickness 2.25 mm, with min overlap of 50%)

This system has been homologated in accordance with DIN 30672/1, under class C (+300C) and is registered at no. 94 – 01 E 466.
The following characteristics of the RP2 heavy duty system can be deduced from this certificate:
- |
Penetration resistance C/500C |
|
Residual thickness 0.98 mm compared to the class C/500C minimum value of 0.6 mm. |
- |
Tape / tape adhesion (N 122.30 / N 122.30) at +500C |
|
3 N/cm and therefore in accordance with the class C/500C limit of 3 N/cm |
- |
Shear strength at 500C |
|
3.6 N/cm compared to the class C/500C minimum value of 5 N/cm |
The N 122.30 tape did not meet the requirement of class C/500C but was classified as C/300C only because of its insufficient shear strength at 500C.
RP3 DIN SYSTEM
This ALTENE system has been produced since 1986 using the most advanced technology and know-how. It is based on a three-ply tape with synthetic rubber and butyl outer faces and a polyethylene layer in the middle.

RP3 H.T SYSTEM
Composition of the system:
Total thickness 3 mm with minimum overlap of 50%
This new anti-corrosive system differs from the RP3 DIN system only in the improved adhesion of the TP 1822.30 H.T. tape to steel (with primer) compared to the standard TP 1822.30 tape.
The table below shows the tape/primer/steel adhesion values for the two tapes at the maximum operating temperature:

TP 1822.30 H.T. |
6 N/cm |
4 N/cm |
TP 1822.30 STD |

7.5 |
It should be noted that the value indicated by DIN 30672/1 for the maximum operating temperature (currently limited during the homologation stage to 500C) is 3N/cm.
This threshold value is adopted (CEN European standard proposal) at the maximum temperature proposed for the production line.
ALTENE MONOTAPE SYSTEM
This ALTENE system is based on the new ALTENE N 394.40 tape which has a special polyolephine backing coupled with a newly conceived adhesive mass which gives the tape instantaneous, strong tape-to-tape taking (on the overlaps).
This exceptional tape-to-tape tacking is due to the particular chemical familiarity between the backing and adhesive mass.
For this reason a silicone-poliethylene antiadhesive tape has been placed between the spirals.
Composition of the system : Total thickness 2 mm with minimum overlap of 50%

This ALTENE system has been approved in accordance with DIN 30672/1 in class C, +300C and registered at no. DIN-DVGW 94-02 E 466.
This system is suitable for manual wrapping or for use with a manual wrapping machine on tubes of up to 600 mm diameter.
The Altene primer P 27 (Suitable for brush or roll application) can be replaced by the primer ALTENE Fly available in 400 ml aerosol cans for spry application.
To solve problems of stability in different light conditions (pipes below bridges, external connections, tank coating etc.) the N3 AL 4.3 tape with the same characteristics as the monotape but with an aluminium film backing has been developed.
The above systems have been developed, homologated and proposed by ALTA as “Standard Systems” taking the overall quality of the coating as a basis, ie. its mechanical strength and resistance to heat in accordance with the DIN homologation. In other words, the systems are suitable for higher quality coatings (extruded PE etc.) to which the DIN standard and relative homologation associates them for the coating of joints protection of the sections of not precoated piped.
The thickness and overlapping adopted are a result of these considerations.
When different thicknesses of total coating and overlapping are used (AWWA standard, UNI 10190 etc.) the RP2 and RP3 systems described above can be adopted as components of the system with the overlapping and thicknesses given in the specifications.
In the case the mechanical performances will be different but the performance of the individual tapes will be guaranteed in accordance with their DIN homologation classification.
The mechanical characteristics of the coating may be improved by using mechanical protection tapes of suitable thickness as outlined in your sample specifications.
Therefore ALTA’s standard production includes outer wrap N206 with a thickness range of 15, 20, 25 and 30 mills.
The following page gives the dimensions of the tape rolls and primer containers in our normal range of production.

The items listed above should be considered our normal range of production, but we are also able to take into consideration different sizes and thickness to suit customers needs. In this case, of course, the products must be quoted as “tailor made” and the prices estimated for each individual order.
For your careful consideration we enclose the data sheets regarding the Altene systems described above. |
